Setup

  1. Five to seven players stand on cones in a circle about 8 m across.
  2. One player stands in the middle without a ball; a circle player has it.

How it runs

  1. A circle player passes to the middle player, who catches and lands.
  2. The middle player pivots on the landing foot to face a different player and passes.
  3. That player passes straight back in, and the middle player pivots again.
  4. Swap the middle player every 30 seconds.

Coaching points

  • The first foot down is the landing foot: it stays on the floor.
  • Step round with the other foot, turning on the ball of the landing foot.
  • Keep the ball close to the chest while you turn.
  • Pivot, look, pass: face the player before you throw.

Common mistakes

  • Lifting and putting down the landing foot again.
  • Shuffling or hopping the landing foot round.
  • Passing before the turn is finished.

Say it: “Landing foot stays, other foot turns.”

Make it harder

  • Coach calls a name; the middle player must pivot to that player.
  • Two balls in the circle, so the middle player turns faster.

Make it easier

  • Middle player holds the ball and practises the pivot first, no catch.
  • Pass only to the players beside the passer, so the turn is small.
