Ball tag warm-up
Taggers can only tag while holding the ball and can't run with it, so they must pass, land and pivot to catch the runners.
Start / 4
- Time
- 6 min
- Players
- 6–16
- Age
- U6+
- Area
- Third of a court
- Equipment
- 1 size 4 netballs4 bibs
Setup
- Everyone inside one third of the court; two taggers in bibs share one ball.
- Runners spread out around the third.
How it runs
- Taggers pass the ball between them to get close to a runner.
- A tag is a touch with the ball held in two hands; no throwing it at runners.
- Taggers must land and hold: no running or stepping with the ball.
- Tagged runners grab a bib and join the taggers; play until three are left.
Coaching points
- Taggers: move without the ball to get close, then call for the pass.
- Catch, land, then pivot on the landing foot to reach the runner.
- Runners: keep your head up and dodge into open space.
- Gentle tags only: touch with the ball, never push.
Common mistakes
- Taggers stepping or running with the ball to chase.
- Taggers trying to tag without the ball.
- Runners leaving the third to escape.
Say it: “Pass to get close, land, pivot, tag.”
Make it harder
- Make the area smaller.
- Taggers have only 3 seconds to pass or tag.
Make it easier
- Three taggers and a bigger area to start.
- Runners walk fast instead of running.
