Setup

  1. Use half a pitch with a goal. Put three 5 m cone gates on halfway.
  2. Keeper with the balls, two centre-backs and two full-backs. Two strikers start on the edge of the box.
  3. Spare strikers wait by the goal to rotate in.

How it runs

  1. Every attack starts with the keeper playing it out short.
  2. The back four score a point by dribbling or passing through any gate.
  3. The strikers score by winning it and shooting within 6 seconds.
  4. Swap the strikers every 3 minutes.

Coaching points

  • Centre-backs split wide to the edges of the box; full-backs get high and wide.
  • Receive on the half-turn so you can play forward.
  • Keeper, play to the free player, the one the strikers can't reach.
  • If the forward pass is blocked, go back to the keeper and switch sides.

Common mistakes

  • Centre-backs stay close together, so one striker marks both.
  • Receiving square-on, facing the touchline, and getting trapped.
  • Forcing a pass through the middle when the strikers have blocked it.

Say it: “Split wide, open up, find the free player.”

Make it harder

  • Add a third striker to make it 4v3.
  • Two touches max for the back four.

Make it easier

  • Strikers must start outside the box and can't tackle the keeper.
  • Make the gates 8 m wide.
