Setup

  1. Mark a 50 × 35 m pitch with a goal at each end. Split it into thirds with cones.
  2. Two teams of six plus a keeper, in a 2-3-1 shape.
  3. Keep spare balls in each goal.

How it runs

  1. Keepers restart short, to a player in the first third.
  2. The ball can't go from the first third straight into the final third. Play through the middle.
  3. A goal is 1 point. A goal after the ball has been through all three thirds is 2.
  4. Play two 10-minute halves with a short break to talk.

Coaching points

  • Defenders, split wide when your keeper has it. Midfielders, show between the opponents.
  • Look forward first. Can I play into the next third?
  • Receive on the half-turn so you face forward as you cross into the next third.
  • Striker, stay high to stretch them, then check short at the right moment.

Common mistakes

  • Everyone drops into the first third to help and there's no one to pass forward to.
  • Midfielders stand behind an opponent and can't be found.
  • Forcing a pass into a crowded middle instead of going back and switching.

Say it: “Through the thirds, not over them.”

Make it harder

  • Two touches max in the middle third.
  • A goal only counts if every outfield player is past the first third.

Make it easier

  • Only two opponents may press inside the first third.
  • Add a floater who plays for the team with the ball.
