Setup

  1. Mark a 30 × 25 m box.
  2. Two teams of five, plus two floaters in a third colour.
  3. Floaters play for whichever team has the ball, two touches max.
  4. Keep spare balls with the coach on the side.

How it runs

  1. The coach plays a ball in. The team with it keeps it, using the floaters.
  2. Six passes in a row scores a point.
  3. Lose it, and the other team keeps it straight away, with the floaters now on their side.
  4. Play 3-minute games with a 1-minute rest. Swap the floaters each game.

Coaching points

  • Make the box big when you have it. Width and depth, not everyone near the ball.
  • Check your shoulder before the ball arrives so you know your next pass.
  • Pass away from pressure, to the side with space.
  • Play into a floater, then move so they can find you again.

Common mistakes

  • Everyone runs towards the ball and the space closes.
  • Players stand behind a defender where they can't be found.
  • Floaters dribble instead of moving it on.

Say it: “Big when we have it. Play where the space is.”

Make it harder

  • Two touches for everyone, one touch for the floaters.
  • A pass from one floater to the other counts double.

Make it easier

  • Make the box 35 × 30 m.
  • Add a third floater.
