Setup

  1. A coach with a ball at the top of the key; a rebounder and a contesting player near the block.
  2. An outlet player at the elbow on the same side; cones on both sidelines at free-throw line extended.

How it runs

  1. The coach shoots (missing is fine); the rebounder turns, finds the contester and boxes out.
  2. The rebounder secures the ball with two hands, chins it and pivots to the sideline, away from pressure.
  3. The outlet player gets wide to the cone, calls for it and catches facing up the court.
  4. The outlet pushes the dribble past halfway with the rebounder filling a lane; rotate roles.

Coaching points

  • Find, hit, get: contact first, then go to the ball.
  • Two hands, elbows out, ball under the chin; no swinging the elbows.
  • Pivot on one foot to the outside before passing; an overhead pass gets over the top.
  • Outlet: back to the sideline, so you can see the whole court on the catch.

Common mistakes

  • Watching the ball and never making contact on the box-out.
  • Dribbling out of traffic instead of passing ahead.
  • The outlet standing still in the middle, where the pass gets picked off.

Say it: “Find, hit, get, outlet.”

Make it harder

  • The contester stays live and can pressure the outlet pass.
  • Score the break in 6 seconds against a defender back at halfway.

Make it easier

  • No contester: the coach tosses the ball off the backboard.
  • The outlet stands at the cone ready.
