Setup

  1. Six players (H1, H2 at half-back, M1, M2 on the wings, F1, F2 forward) against five opponents spread out as if they were attacking.
  2. Cone a corridor about 30 m wide down the middle of the ground.
  3. A coach on the wing kicks a long ball toward the opponents' forward line to start each rep, where H1 is set to intercept.

How it runs

  1. The ball is turned over by an intercept mark or a spoil and gather, and the coach starts a 25 s clock.
  2. The carrier reads the picture. With the corridor open and opponents still ahead of the ball, play on and kick long through the corridor. If the opponents have set behind the ball, chip short and switch to the far side.
  3. Score 6 for a goal inside 25 s, 2 for a mark inside 50, 1 for a behind; the opponents score 3 if they win it back.
  4. Eight reps per group with 60 s between; rotate the interceptor each rep.

Coaching points

  • Look long and through the corridor first; the best time to score is in the first 5 s after a turnover, before the opposition sets.
  • Play on from the mark if the picture is there. Mark, eyes up, go.
  • If the chip is the answer, kick it with weight to the receiver's outside shoulder and switch within two kicks while the press is still moving.
  • Runners go wide and fast as soon as the ball is won, giving the carrier width and a handball over the top.

Common mistakes

  • Going back and holding the mark when the corridor is open.
  • Kicking long into a set zone where the team is outnumbered at the contest.
  • Everyone running to the ball and nobody holding width.

Say it: “Win it, look long, go.”

Make it harder

  • Cut the clock to 15 s.
  • Add a sixth opponent as a spare sitting in the corridor.

Make it easier

  • Opponents walk for the first 5 s after the turnover.
  • The coach calls corridor or switch as the ball is won.
