Rebound from defensive 50

Defenders win the ball in their back 50 and rebound fast through the corridor when it's open, or down the boundary when it isn't.

Setup

  1. Cone the defensive 50 m arc. Four defenders, a centre half-back (CH) and a winger against four forwards.
  2. The coach kicks the ball into the 50 for a defender to mark or pick up.
  3. Halfway is the target: the defending team scores by getting a mark or clean possession past it.

How it runs

  1. Once a defender has the ball, the team rebounds to halfway in four disposals or fewer.
  2. Corridor if it's open, boundary line if it isn't: the coach calls out which one was right after each go.
  3. Rebounding to halfway scores 1; the forwards score 1 for a turnover and 2 for a goal from it.
  4. Six goes, then swap two forwards with two defenders.

Coaching points

  • Win it and look up: play on quickly before the forwards set up.
  • The second defender peels off and runs into space to give the first option.
  • Use the corridor only when the receiver is free and facing up; otherwise go wide down the line.
  • Kick to the outside shoulder of a leading player, away from the chasing forward.

Common mistakes

  • Kicking across the face of goal where an intercept means a goal.
  • Taking the mark and then going back behind the mark when space is open.
  • Everyone runs forward and nobody stays as the safe option behind the ball.

Say it: “Win it, look up, corridor or line.”

Make it harder

  • Forwards set a zone and the rebound must beat it.
  • Three disposals to halfway.

Make it easier

  • Forwards can't tackle, only touch, on the first round.
  • Coach feeds the ball directly to the defender's hands.
