Young players spend a lot of a game standing still and hoping the ball finds them. This session teaches them to make it happen: lead, drive, call for the ball, and land on balance.
Run it as written the first time. Next week, keep the structure and change one drill.
0–10 min
Warm-up: chain tag
One player is it. Anyone tagged links arms with them, and the chain grows until everyone is caught. Keep it inside one third of the court so players have to dodge and change direction.
- Finish with five minutes of passing in pairs: chest, bounce, then shoulder passes.
- Watch for players catching with straight arms. Ask for soft hands and elbows bent.
10–25 min
Drill: lead and drive
Players work in threes in the centre third: a feeder, a worker and a defender.
- B takes two quick steps towards the ball, then pushes off the outside foot and drives into open space.
- A passes into the space B is running to, not to where B is.
- D starts passive, then contests after a few goes.
- Swap roles every five passes.
Coach it: land on one foot or two, then stop. Eyes up before you pass.
25–40 min
Drill: centre pass to the attacking third
Set up a centre pass with a centre, a wing attack and a goal attack against two defenders. The centre passes to whichever attacker gets free first.
- The two attackers start on different sides of the court, so they don't run into the same space.
- If neither is free, the centre waits. A held ball is better than a forced one.
- After the first pass, finish with a shot. Rotate positions every few goes.
40–55 min
Modified game: three passes before a shot
Play a normal game with one rule: the team needs three passes in the attacking third before anyone shoots. It rewards the leading and driving from earlier.
- Change positions every five minutes, so everyone plays centre court and everyone has a turn in the circle.
- Call out good leads by name, even when the pass doesn't come.
55–60 min
Cool-down and one takeaway
Light stretching in a circle. Ask each player for one thing they did well today. Finish with the takeaway: “Move to get the ball, don't wait for it.”
Put Tuesday's training on the schedule, see who's coming, then mark who came.
