Young footy players love to kick, but in a game the ball spends a lot of time in their hands. A clean handball keeps it moving and gets everyone involved.
This session works on one skill from start to finish. Use half a ground, a few cones and one ball between two.
0–10 min
Warm-up: stuck in the mud
Two or three taggers chase everyone else inside a coned square. Tagged players stand still with their legs apart. A teammate frees them by crawling through their legs.
- Swap taggers every two minutes so everyone gets a turn.
- Finish with three minutes of handballing in pairs from three steps apart.
10–25 min
Drill: hit the target
Pairs stand three steps apart, facing each other. One handballs, the partner catches with hands out in front like a target. After three good ones in a row, both take a step back.
- Hold: rest the ball on the flat palm of your holding hand, fingers spread.
- Fist: make a fist with the thumb on the outside, not tucked in.
- Stance: feet apart, knees bent, lean a little forward.
- Punch: hit the back point of the ball and follow through to your partner's hands.
Then swap hands. Most kids have a weaker side, and this is the age to work on it.
Coach it: keep the holding hand still. The punching hand does the work.
25–40 min
Drill: run past and receive
Players work in threes. A has the ball. B runs past A, takes the handball on the move, then handballs to C.
- B calls for the ball as they run past. A short call like "Here!" works.
- A handballs into the space in front of B, not at B's body.
- Start at walking pace. Build to a jog once the handballs are clean.
- Rotate roles after every three goes.
Coach it: eyes on the target before you handball.
40–55 min
Modified game: handball keepings off
Split into two teams in a coned square about 20 steps on each side. Teams score a point for every five handballs in a row without a drop.
- No tackling. A defender can touch the ball or intercept a handball.
- If the ball hits the ground, the other team takes it.
- Add a rule after five minutes: you can't handball back to the player who gave it to you.
55–60 min
Cool-down and one takeaway
Walk a lap of the coned area, then light stretching in a circle. Ask each player to show you their handball fist. Finish with the takeaway: "Still hand holds, strong hand punches."
Put training on the schedule once and it repeats each week. See who's coming before you set out the cones.
