Setup

  1. C with the ball, WA to lead for it, WD (wd) defending WA, and c as wd's outlet.
  2. All in the centre third; run two groups across the width if needed.

How it runs

  1. WA leads for the pass; wd sits a step off, between WA and the ball, watching C.
  2. When C commits to the pass, wd drives across WA's front to intercept.
  3. If wd wins it, they land, balance and pass to c; if not, WA plays on to C.
  4. Five leads, then rotate.

Coaching points

  • Sit off on the ball side so you can see the ball and the attacker.
  • Read C's eyes and shoulders, then go on the release, not before.
  • Take the ball with two hands at full stretch; one hand if you must.
  • Land on one foot and stay in the court; no contact on the way through.

Common mistakes

  • Going too early, so C simply passes elsewhere.
  • Running through WA instead of across their front.
  • Landing off balance and stepping, which is a footwork call.

Say it: “Sit off, read, explode.”

Make it harder

  • C can fake a pass before releasing.
  • Add a second attacking option for C.

Make it easier

  • C passes on a call of 'now'.
  • Lob passes only at first.
