Setup

  1. Mark a 20 × 20 m square. Three teams of three in different bibs.
  2. Two teams keep the ball: four on the sides, two inside. The third team presses inside.

How it runs

  1. The six keep it on two touches. A pass that splits two defenders scores a point; 12 passes in a row scores two.
  2. The three score by winning it and making two passes, or by forcing it off an attacker out of the square.
  3. A new team defends every 90 seconds. 6 × 90 s, 30 s rest between.

Coaching points

  • Inside players find the space between two defenders and get out of their cover shadow.
  • First touch out of the presser's path and towards the next pass, so the second touch is the pass.
  • Press as a three: one on the ball with a curved run, one screening the split pass, one tight on the nearest inside player.
  • Jump on the trigger: a slow pass across the square, a back pass or a touch that bounces up.

Common mistakes

  • Outside players stand flat on the line instead of adjusting for a clear angle.
  • The first defender runs straight at the ball and the easy pass goes round them.
  • Both inside players drift into the same lane.

Say it: “Out of the shadow. Two touches. Split them.”

Make it harder

  • One touch for the inside players.
  • Shrink the square to 16 × 16 m.

Make it easier

  • Three touches for the outside players.
  • Defenders score by winning it and making one pass.
