Setup
- Use half a pitch. Mark a 12 m wide channel on one flank, from halfway to the end line.
- A winger and a full-back start in the channel against one defender.
- Two strikers wait outside the box with one defender and a keeper.
How it runs
- The winger drives at the channel defender and the full-back runs past.
- Defender tucks inside? Overlap round the outside. Defender stays wide? Underlap inside.
- Get to the end line and cross. A goal is 1 point, a first-time finish is 2.
- Defenders score by winning it and clearing it out of the area. Rotate roles every 4 goes.
Coaching points
- Winger, drive at the defender's inside shoulder to make them commit.
- Full-back, time the run so you arrive at speed just as the defender commits.
- Pass into the runner's path, not to their feet.
- Strikers, one attacks the near post and one the far post. Don't arrive too early.
Common mistakes
- The full-back runs too early and the defender just follows.
- The winger passes before the defender has committed.
- Both strikers run to the same spot.
Say it: “Fix the defender, time the run, cross early.”
Make it harder
- A second defender can join the channel after 3 seconds.
- Crosses must be first time.
Make it easier
- The channel defender is passive for each pair's first go.
- Widen the channel to 16 m.
