Setup

  1. Five defenders in a 1-3-1: point at the top, two wings, a middle at the high post, a baseline rover.
  2. Five attackers in a 2-1-2 or 1-3-1 look; spares rotate in each 2 minutes.

How it runs

  1. On the pass to the wing, the point and the wing trap: the wing takes the baseline side, the point cuts off the middle.
  2. The middle fronts the high post, the baseline rover takes the short corner, the weak wing sits in the lane for the pass back.
  3. On a pass to the corner, the baseline rover and wing trap; the middle drops to the rim.
  4. Run to a stop or a score, steals are live the other way. 2-minute blocks, 1 minute rest.

Coaching points

  • Trap on the catch, not after the first dribble; the ball should not come back out cleanly.
  • Interceptors play the passer's eyes and leave early on a lob.
  • Baseline rover: you cover corner to corner; sprint, don't slide.
  • When the trap is beaten, everyone gets back to the rim first, then out to shooters.

Common mistakes

  • The point trapping from behind, leaving the pass to the middle open.
  • The middle defender ball-watching while the high post flashes behind them.
  • Trapping with hands down so the handler sees over the top.

Say it: “Trap the catch, front the middle, read the eyes.”

Make it harder

  • Attack gets a point for every short-corner catch.
  • Defence must force a turnover within 12 seconds.

Make it easier

  • Attack can't skip from wing to wing.
  • Walk the slides with the ball held, then go live.
