Setup

  1. Four attackers, one inbounding from the baseline after a made basket; four defenders.
  2. Spare players wait at halfway and rotate in after each possession.

How it runs

  1. Defenders deny every receiver; the inbounder's defender faces the ball and arms up, hiding the middle.
  2. On the catch, the on-ball defender turns the handler to the sideline and keeps them out of the middle.
  3. The inbounder's defender traps before halfway: square to the sideline, knees together, no reaching.
  4. Rotate on the trap: one defender takes the return pass, the deepest takes the long pass up the line. 4v4 to halfway or a steal; 45 seconds, then switch.

Coaching points

  • Deny with the chest on the receiver's hip and a hand in the passing lane.
  • Turn the ball twice before the trap; a handler changing direction can't see the floor.
  • Trap with the sideline and halfway line as extra defenders; arms high to force a lob.
  • After a trap is beaten, everyone sprints back inside the three-point line before they look for their player.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching in the trap and giving a foul.
  • Trapping from in front, so the handler splits it up the middle.
  • The back defender guarding a player instead of the most dangerous pass.

Say it: “Deny, turn, trap, rotate.”

Make it harder

  • Inbounder can run the baseline after a made basket.
  • Defence must force a 5-second count or a turnover to score.

Make it easier

  • Attack must inbound to one side, called beforehand.
  • Play 3v3 with no long pass allowed.
