Setup

  1. Four attackers at one end, three defenders back at the other.
  2. Spare players wait on the sideline at halfway, one team's colour each side.

How it runs

  1. Attack pushes 4v3 and scores in 6 seconds or less.
  2. On a score, miss or turnover, the three defenders go the other way and a fresh player sprints on from halfway to make four.
  3. The attacker who shot or lost it stays as the lone defender; the other three come off.
  4. Run 4 minutes, 2 minutes rest; keep score of advantage possessions scored.

Coaching points

  • Ball middle, wide lanes, trailer late: spacing makes the extra player count.
  • Pass ahead of the defence; every dribble gives them a step to recover.
  • The advantage moves with the ball: make the defender commit, then hit the free player.
  • Defenders: protect the rim first, stop the ball second, then close out long.

Common mistakes

  • Four attackers in three lanes, so one defender guards two.
  • Holding the ball until the defence recovers and the advantage is gone.
  • Defenders flying out to the first pass and giving up the layup.

Say it: “Make one commit, pass the advantage on.”

Make it harder

  • 6-second clock; no shot means a point to the defence.
  • Defenders score 2 for a stop.

Make it easier

  • Play 3v2 first.
  • The new defender joins late, from the halfway line.
