Baseline out-of-bounds plays
A box set from under the basket: a back screen for a cut to the rim, then the screener pops for the shot, run against a live defence.

- Time
- 15 min

- 10–12
- Age
- U15+
- Area
- Half court
- Equipment
- 2 basketballs5 bibs
Setup
- Inbounder on the baseline beside the key; four attackers in a box at the elbows and blocks; five defenders in man-to-man.
- The inbounder slaps the ball to start; five seconds to get it in.
How it runs
- The ball-side elbow comes down and back screens the ball-side block's defender; the block cuts to the rim.
- The screener pops straight out to the elbow; the weak-side elbow lifts to the top as the safety.
- Inbounder reads the screen: cutter if open, popper if the defence switches or helps, safety if both are taken.
- Run 5v5 live to a score; then the defence switches or zones to make the attack adjust. Ten reps, swap.
Coaching points
- Screeners stop before contact, arms in: a back screen gives a step of space to a defender who can't see it.
- Cutters wait for the screen, then go: set your defender up with a step away first.
- Inbounder: eyes on the safety to hold the defence, then throw to the target hand.
- Against a zone, the same set flattens out and screens the zone's back line.
Common mistakes
- Moving screens because the cutter left too early.
- Every option run at once, so no one is free when the inbounder looks.
- The inbounder stepping onto the court before the ball is released.
Say it: “Screen, cut, pop, safety.”
Make it harder
- Defence switches every screen; the screener slips to the rim.
- Only 3 seconds on the inbound count.
Make it easier
- 5v0 walk-throughs, then 5v3 with defenders only on the cutters.
- Inbounder can call the option before the slap.
