Setup

  1. Groups of three: two cones 20 m apart, a kicker at one and a partner at the other.
  2. The third player stands 5 m to the kicker's side as the pressure player.
  3. One ball per group, with spares behind each cone.

How it runs

  1. The kicker takes two or three steps and drop punts to the partner, alternating preferred and non-preferred foot.
  2. From the second round the pressure player jogs at the kicker, arms up, to hurry the kick. No contact.
  3. The partner marks and kicks back on the same foot as the kick they received.
  4. Rotate kicker, partner and pressure player every six kicks.

Coaching points

  • Hold the ball upright over the kicking leg and guide it down with the same-side hand.
  • Drop it, don't throw it: eyes on the ball until it meets the foot.
  • Toe pointed, contact on the laces, follow through straight to the target.
  • On the non-preferred foot, slow down and shorten the kick before adding pace.

Common mistakes

  • Stepping around the ball to use the preferred foot.
  • Dropping the ball from too high or across the body.
  • Looking up at the target before the foot meets the ball.

Say it: “Guide it down, toe pointed, follow through to the target.”

Make it harder

  • Pressure player starts 3 m away.
  • The partner leads left or right, so the target moves.

Make it easier

  • Cut the non-preferred kicks to 12 m.
  • No pressure player; count clean marks out of ten.
