Setup
- Cones mark the back half of each far service box as the target.
- Server on the deuce side behind the baseline; a returner on the far baseline.
How it runs
- Serve 10 second serves per side, aiming for the back half of the box.
- Then play the 'one serve' game: every point starts with a single second serve.
- A miss is a double fault and loses the point; otherwise play the point out.
- First to 7, then swap server and returner.
Coaching points
- Continental grip, or slightly towards eastern backhand for more spin.
- Toss above the head, a little towards the hitting side of the head, not out in front.
- Brush up the back of the ball, low to high, and keep swinging fast.
- Aim 1–2 metres over the net; spin, not a slower arm, brings the ball down.
Common mistakes
- Slowing the arm down to push the ball in.
- Tossing too far in front, which flattens the serve out.
- Aiming low over the net for safety and hitting the tape.
Say it: “Brush up, swing fast.”
Make it harder
- Only serves landing in the back half of the box count.
- Aim at the returner's backhand in the back half.
Make it easier
- Serve from the service line to feel the brushing action.
- Any serve in the box counts.
