Setup

  1. A server at one end; the returner at the other.
  2. Cones mark a deep middle target, about three metres wide, near the server's baseline.
  3. To add pace, the server can serve from a metre or two inside the baseline.

How it runs

  1. The server hits first serves only, mixing wide, body and T.
  2. The returner blocks or chips the return deep through the middle.
  3. Score 1 for any return in, 2 for a return in the target.
  4. Ten serves to each box, then swap roles.

Coaching points

  • Start a step further back if the serve is too fast; move in for second serves.
  • Split-step as the server swings, landing as the ball is struck.
  • Unit turn with the shoulders; very short backswing, firm wrist.
  • Use the server's pace; block through the ball with the body moving forwards if possible.
  • Deep middle takes away the server's angles for the +1.

Common mistakes

  • Big backswing, so the ball is late and sprays wide.
  • Split-step too early or too late, flat-footed at contact.
  • Going for the line off a first serve.

Say it: “Split, turn, short, through.”

Make it harder

  • Server plays the point out; returner must win it.
  • Returns must go past the service line and in the target.

Make it easier

  • Server serves at three-quarter pace from the baseline.
  • Returner calls the side early; server serves only to that side.
