Setup
- The volleyer stands about two big steps from the net, in the middle of the service boxes.
- Coach stands across the net at the service line and feeds underarm.
- Cones mark a target area in each of the coach's service boxes.
How it runs
- Catch: no racket. Catch the feed out in front with the hitting hand, no bounce.
- Short racket: hold the racket at the throat and catch the ball on the strings, then let it drop.
- Punch: still holding short, step forward and punch the ball into a target.
- Alternate forehand and backhand side. Six balls each, then rotate.
Coaching points
- Continental grip: shake hands with the racket, so one grip works on both sides.
- Ready position with the racket up in front at chest height.
- Catch the ball in front of the body, where you can see it.
- Short punch, no backswing; the racket stops just after contact.
- Step forward with the opposite foot as you punch.
Common mistakes
- Swinging at the volley like a groundstroke.
- Letting the ball come too close to the body.
- Racket head dropping below the wrist.
Say it: “See it, catch it, punch it.”
Make it harder
- Slide the hand down to the end of the grip for a full-length racket.
- Coach feeds a little faster and mixes sides without calling them.
Make it easier
- Stay at the catch stage with a bigger, softer ball.
- Feed every ball to the forehand side.
