Three-step sparring
Prearranged sambeon kyorugi (three-step sparring): three stepping punches met by three blocks, then a controlled counter with no contact to the head.
Start / 6
- Time
- 15 min
- Players
- 2–30
- Age
- U9+
- Area
- Mat
- Equipment
- mouthguardsforearm and shin guardstrunk protectors (hogu) if counters touch the body
Setup
- Pairs matched by size, age and experience, facing each other about two steps apart, with room behind the defender.
- Attacker (R) and defender (B) bow (kyeongye) and take junbi. Clubs differ on the start signal; use your own (often the attacker steps back into front stance with a low block and a kihap).
- The sabeom supervises every pair; counters are controlled and nothing goes to the head.
How it runs
- R steps forward three times in front stance with a middle punch (momtong jireugi); B steps back each time with a middle block.
- After the third block, B counters with one set technique: a reverse punch to the trunk or a kick to the trunk, stopping short or touching lightly as the sabeom allows.
- Both kihap on the counter, reset, bow and swap roles.
- Run five counters per side; the sabeom then gives a new counter (for example block, step in and elbow strike to the body, stopping short).
Coaching points
- Attacker punches with real intent at the correct distance so the block has something to meet.
- Defender steps back the same length each time to keep the distance.
- Blocks finish on the forearm, then the hand chambers for the counter.
- The counter is precise and controlled: show the target, then stop.
- Eyes on the partner throughout, including on the bow.
Common mistakes
- Attacker punching short so the defender never has to block.
- Defender stepping back too far, then lunging to counter.
- Counters drifting up towards the face.
- Rushing through the sequence without finishing stances.
Say it: “Step, block, step, block, step, block, counter.”
Make it harder
- Defender chooses their own counter from a list of three.
- Attacker punches high section (the defender blocks, but the counter still goes to the trunk).
- Two-step, then one-step sparring for senior coloured belts.
Make it easier
- Walk-through pace with the sabeom counting each step.
- Block only, no counter, for the first round.
- Shorter steps in walking stance.
