Setup

  1. Students in waves along one end of the mat, about two arm-and-leg lengths apart sideways.
  2. Each wave has its own lane; the next wave waits behind.
  3. Water handy; clean, dry mat; bare feet and no jewellery.

How it runs

  1. The sabeom names the kick, then calls 'sijak'. Wave one kicks on every step across the mat; wave two sets off when wave one is half-way.
  2. At the far side, waves line up and rest while the next kick is named, then come back the other way.
  3. Suggested lengths: ap chagi (front kick), dollyeo chagi (roundhouse kick), yeop chagi (side kick), then a kick-and-switch combination.
  4. For fitness, finish with two fast lengths where the waves count their kicks out loud.

Coaching points

  • Every kick goes back to the chamber and lands in fighting stance before the next step.
  • Guard up the whole length, even when tired.
  • Kick at belt height with good form before kicking higher.
  • Kihap on the last kick of each length.
  • Watch the lane: stay in line with the people beside you.

Common mistakes

  • Rushing across with half-kicks to finish first.
  • Drifting sideways into the next lane.
  • Setting off before the wave in front is clear.
  • Hands dropping on the way back.

Say it: “Kick, chamber, land, step.”

Make it harder

  • Two kicks per step, alternating legs.
  • Add a back kick (dwit chagi) length for older groups.
  • Timed lengths with a short rest.

Make it easier

  • Walk a step between kicks.
  • Half-length and back.
  • One kick type for the whole set.
