Setup

  1. Pairs at the tables for the first part; a clear patch of floor beside the tables for stretching, away from any table still in use.
  2. Water bottles within reach but off the playing area.

How it runs

  1. Half-pace rally (about three minutes): slow forehand and backhand rallies, aiming for the middle of the table, letting the breathing settle.
  2. Ball pick-up: everyone collects every stray ball into the tubes or nets, including under tables and behind surrounds, before anyone stretches.
  3. Stretches (about four minutes), each held gently for around 20 to 30 seconds without bouncing: wrist and forearm (both directions), across-the-body shoulder, triceps, calves against a wall or table leg (not a table in use), and quads, holding the table edge or a partner for balance.
  4. Review (two to three minutes): each player says one thing that went well today and one thing to practise next time; the coach adds one point for the whole group.
  5. Water, then pack the tables away safely as the coach directs.

Coaching points

  • Easy pace means easy: no smashes in the cool-down rally.
  • Stretch to mild tension, never pain.
  • Be specific in the review: 'my backhand elbow stayed forward' beats 'it was good'.
  • Listen to each other; one person speaks at a time.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the cool-down rally into a match.
  • Stretching with balls still rolling around the floor.
  • Rushing the stretches or skipping the calves after footwork work.
  • Vague reviews that give nothing to work on next session.

Say it: “Slow it down, pick up, reflect.”

Make it harder

  • Players lead the stretches for the group in turn.
  • Each player writes their 'practise next' point down and brings it to the next session.

Make it easier

  • Shorter rally, or catch-and-pat instead of a rally.
  • Coach leads every stretch and asks one question to the group for the review.
