Side-step footwork basics
Players learn the side-step (shuffle) between forehand and backhand positions, first as shadow play and then to the coach's slow feeds.

Setup
- Two cones behind the player's end: one level with the forehand corner, one with the backhand corner, about a big step apart for the player's size.
- Floor clear of balls along the line the player moves on; non-slip indoor shoes.
- Coach feeds from the side of the far end, with the bucket off the floor.
How it runs
- Warm up the calves and ankles first: gentle heel raises and small hops on the spot.
- Shadow: from ready in the middle, side-step to the forehand cone and shadow a forehand, then side-step back across to the backhand cone and shadow a backhand. Ten each way, at walking pace.
- The side-step: push off the outside foot, slide the near foot first, and let the feet come close together without crossing.
- With feeds: the coach feeds slowly to forehand, then backhand, alternately. The player side-steps to each ball and plays a controlled drive to the middle of the far half.
- Short sets (about ten balls), with rest and ball collection between; the coach raises the tempo only when the feet stay neat.
Coaching points
- Stay low: knees bent and the head at the same height throughout the move.
- Push from the foot furthest from where you're going.
- Feet never cross and never come together with a click; keep a gap.
- Arrive, then hit: be set before the ball reaches you.
Common mistakes
- Reaching with the arm instead of moving the feet.
- Standing up tall between shots, which slows the next move.
- Crossing the feet and losing balance.
- Too much volume too soon; tired legs lead to sloppy steps.
Say it: “Push, slide, stay low.”
Make it harder
- Move the cones a little wider apart.
- Coach feeds a little faster, or feeds two to one side and one to the other.
- Add a return to ready in the middle between each ball.
Make it easier
- Shadow only, at walking pace, without a ball.
- Cones closer together, or a single small step each way.
- Coach calls the side before feeding.
