Round the table
The classic group game: hit once, run round to the other end, and stay in by keeping the ball on the table.
Start / 7
- Time
- 15 min
- Players
- 4–12
- Age
- U6–U12
- Area
- Table with clear space all round
- Equipment
- 6 balls12 bats1 ball net or pick-up tube
Setup
- One table with clear space all round it: move barriers, bags and bottles well back, and make sure the next table isn't in the running path.
- Split the group into two queues, one behind each end. Only one ball is in play; spares go in a tube or box away from the running path.
- Agree the running direction before starting; everyone runs the same way round.
How it runs
- The first player at one end starts the rally with a simple serve or a bounce-and-pat; the first player at the other end returns it.
- After each hit, the player keeps their bat, steps away from the table and runs round the outside to join the back of the queue at the other end.
- The next player in that queue steps in and plays the next ball, so each player hits once per visit to an end.
- A player who misses (into the net, off the table, or doesn't reach the ball) is out, and the next player restarts the rally.
- When only two players are left, they play a short final of single points, with the player who wins the most of three taking the game (a common house rule; agree the final format before starting).
- Everyone joins in again for the next game; players who are out help collect stray balls or count lives.
Coaching points
- Hit, then go: start moving as soon as the ball leaves the bat.
- Run on the outside of the queue and the table, never between a hitter and the table.
- Arrive at the end early and set in the ready stance before the ball comes.
- Play safe, middle-of-the-table shots; the aim is to stay in, not to beat someone.
Common mistakes
- Watching your own shot instead of moving off.
- Cutting the corner and colliding with the next hitter.
- Smashing at the ball; a gentle rally keeps more players in.
Say it: “Hit and go.”
Make it harder
- Players must alternate forehand and backhand on each visit.
- Speed up: when the group is small, add a rule that players touch a cone on the way round.
Make it easier
- House rule: three lives each instead of being out on the first miss.
- Walk round instead of running for the youngest or a crowded room.
- Allow the ball to bounce twice on your side for the youngest (house rule).
