Doubles movement and alternating hits

Two pairs rally cooperatively, hitting alternately and moving in and out so each partner always has a clear path to the ball.

Setup

  1. Pairs A1 and A2 against B1 and B2 at one table, with more clear floor behind each end than for singles.
  2. Clear any loose balls before each rally; four moving players make a rolling ball more dangerous.

How it runs

  1. Start with a gentle doubles serve, then rally cooperatively at a steady pace.
  2. Partners hit alternately: the hitting order runs server, receiver, server's partner, receiver's partner.
  3. After each shot the hitter steps back and out to the side; the partner steps in to take the next ball.
  4. Count shots in a row as a group of four. Two-minute rounds, then swap who starts.
  5. Progress: one pair attacks and the other blocks, still keeping the rally going.

Coaching points

  • Move out of the way as soon as you have hit; the partner needs the space straight away.
  • Stay out of the partner's line to the ball: clear back and to the side, then circle round.
  • Talk: a quick 'yours' or 'mine' helps when the ball goes to the middle.
  • Many pairs move in a circle or an in-and-out line; agree one pattern and stick to it.

Common mistakes

  • Hitting and then standing still, blocking the partner.
  • Both partners going for the same ball, or one hitting twice.
  • Clearing too far and arriving late for the next turn.

Say it: “Hit, clear, come back in.”

Make it harder

  • Play it as a points game with normal doubles rules.
  • One player in each pair is left-handed or plays only forehands, which changes the movement.

Make it easier

  • Slow rally with only forehands to the middle of the table.
  • Walk-through the movement without a ball first.
