Cooperative rally count
Partners work together to keep the ball on the table, counting every hit and trying to beat their own best score.

Setup
- Pairs, one at each end of a table. Spare balls in a tube or box at the side, not loose on the floor.
- Each pair has a target number to beat, starting with their own best from last time or 10.
How it runs
- Start the rally with a gentle bounce-and-pat, not a full serve, so every rally begins easily.
- Both players play forehand crosscourt, counting each hit out loud together.
- If the ball misses the table or hits the net, start again from zero and try to beat the best score.
- After three minutes, switch to backhand to backhand, still on the diagonal.
- Finish with a mixed round: any stroke, any line, as long as it stays friendly and on the table.
Coaching points
- Help your partner: aim for the middle of their half at a steady pace.
- Medium height over the net, about a bat's height, is a safe target.
- Back to ready after every shot so you're set for the next ball.
- Watch the ball off your partner's bat, not your own.
Common mistakes
- Hitting harder as the count rises and losing the rally.
- Standing too close to the table and getting jammed.
- Forgetting to count, so the pair can't measure progress.
Say it: “Help your partner, count together.”
Make it harder
- The count only goes up if both players use the stroke the coach names.
- Play to small targets near each corner.
- Pairs race other tables to 30 hits without stopping.
Make it easier
- House rule for the youngest: the ball may bounce twice on your side before you hit it.
- Count catches as well: one player rallies, the other catches and pats it back.
