Setup

  1. CO feeds from the side of the far end, with the bucket raised and out of the player's path.
  2. P1 stands close to the table on the backhand half, feet about square to the table and the bat in front of the body.
  3. Collect stray balls with a net or tube after every set.

How it runs

  1. Stage 1: CO feeds long backspin to the backhand; P1 plays a backhand topspin. 10 balls.
  2. Stage 2: CO feeds short, low backspin; P1 steps in and flicks it over the table. 10 balls.
  3. Stage 3: CO alternates long and short in a set order, then mixes them at random.
  4. Rotate after each set and count the balls that land on the far half.

Coaching points

  • Topspin: bend the knees and start the bat low in front of the body, wrist relaxed and cocked back.
  • Swing up and forward from the elbow, letting the forearm open and the wrist release through contact.
  • Flick: step in with the right foot under the table (left foot for left-handers) so the bat reaches the ball without stretching.
  • Meet the short ball at the top of the bounce with a short, quick stroke.
  • After the flick, step straight back out to the ready position.

Common mistakes

  • Reaching for the short ball from too far back, so the flick drops into the net.
  • A stiff wrist and a flat bat against backspin.
  • Staying in after the flick and getting jammed by the next long ball.

Say it: “Low and up; in, flick, out.”

Make it harder

  • Random long and short feeds from the start.
  • CO calls a corner as each ball is fed, and P1 aims there.

Make it easier

  • Light backspin or no-spin feeds.
  • Practise stage 1 and stage 2 in separate sessions before mixing them.
