Setup
- The working player starts at the baseline. The feeder stands at the kitchen line on the other side with a basket of balls.
- Put a cone about halfway between the baseline and the kitchen line, and a second one a few steps from the kitchen line: these are the two stopping points.
How it runs
- The working player moves forward to the first cone and split-steps as the feeder makes contact.
- The feeder sends a firm ball low, at the feet or to either side, never at the head.
- The player resets it softly into the feeder's kitchen, off the bounce or as a low volley. This is a fed drill, so volleys are allowed from the first ball.
- Move up to the second cone, split-step, reset the next feed, then finish at the kitchen line.
- Walk back to the baseline and repeat. Six runs, then swap roles.
Coaching points
- Stop and split-step as the feeder hits: a player still moving can't adjust to the ball.
- Stay low with the paddle out in front; let the knees, not the wrist, take the ball down.
- Short, soft stroke: absorb the pace and aim the ball to drop into the kitchen.
- Only move forward after a good reset; after a poor one, hold the spot and reset again.
Common mistakes
- Running through the feed instead of stopping to split-step.
- Swinging at a low ball and popping it up for the opponent to attack.
- Standing tall and reaching down with the paddle.
Say it: “Stop, drop, soft hands.”
Make it harder
- The feeder mixes in a ball that sits up, and the player must choose to attack it rather than reset.
- Play the point out once the player reaches the kitchen line.
Make it easier
- Feeder sends slower, higher balls for the first few runs.
- Start from mid-court and only use the second cone.
