Court agility conditioning
Short, controlled bursts of the movements pickleball asks for: move up, split-step, shuffle along the kitchen line and turn to go back.
Start / 6
- Time
- 20 min
- Players
- 1–8
- Age
- U14+
- Area
- Half court
- Equipment
- 4 conespaddleswater bottles
Setup
- Cones on one half: one at the centre of the baseline, one at the middle of the kitchen line and one near each end of the kitchen line, about a metre in from the sideline.
- Warm up first for at least 5 minutes: easy jogging, ankle circles, calf raises, gentle lunges, arm and wrist circles.
- Court shoes with lateral support. Up to four players per half court, working one at a time with the others resting.
How it runs
- One rep: from the baseline cone, move forward to the kitchen-line cone and split-step as the coach points left or right.
- Shuffle sideways to that end cone with the paddle up, touch the cone with the paddle, then shuffle across to the other end cone.
- Turn sideways and cross-step or jog back to the baseline cone. No backpedalling, ever.
- Work about 20 seconds, then rest at least 40 seconds while the next player goes. Start with 4 reps and add 1 or 2 a session if everyone is moving well; stop at 8.
- Finish with 3 minutes of easy walking and calf, hamstring and hip stretches.
Coaching points
- Quality over speed: low, balanced and controlled feet beat a fast but sloppy rep.
- Split-step small and land on the balls of both feet, ready to go either way.
- Shuffle without crossing the feet along the kitchen line; keep the paddle up as if volleying.
- To go back, turn the hips and shoulders first, then cross-step. Moving backwards while facing the net is how players fall.
- Calves and Achilles tendons take most of the load in this drill. Build reps slowly over weeks, especially for older players or anyone returning from a break.
- Stop at once with any sharp pain, especially in the calf, Achilles or knee, and don't train through it.
- Outdoors, drink between sets and take shade breaks in the heat; cut the reps on hot days.
Common mistakes
- Backpedalling to the baseline instead of turning.
- Standing tall and flat-footed at the kitchen line, so the split-step is late.
- Shortening the rest to make it harder; the point is quality on every rep.
- Skipping the warm-up because the drill looks short.
Say it: “Split, shuffle, turn, never backpedal.”
Make it harder
- The coach points twice per rep, so the player changes direction along the line.
- Add a shadow volley or dink at each cone.
- Replace the pointing with a coloured cone called out late.
Make it easier
- Walk the pattern first, then add pace.
- Use only the middle and one end cone.
- Rest a full minute or more between reps.
