Setup

  1. Full equipment for everyone: helmet with full cage, mouthguard, neck guard, gloves, pads and skates. The goaltender is in full goalie gear.
  2. A line of shooters at the blue line on the top side. A feeder (P2) stands in the bottom corner with a pile of pucks.
  3. Snapshots and wrist shots only: no slapshots in this drill.
  4. With a second goaltender, run the same drill at the other end.

How it runs

  1. The shooter skates down into the high slot. The feeder passes when the goaltender is set and has called ready.
  2. The shooter catches the pass and releases a snapshot within a stride, with no extra stickhandle.
  3. The shooter skates on to the corner and becomes the feeder; the feeder joins the back of the line.
  4. Next rep only when the goaltender has reset, called ready and the crease is clear of pucks.
  5. Switch the feeder to the top corner halfway so shooters receive from both sides. Water between rounds.

Coaching points

  • Puck in the middle of the blade, slightly off the back foot.
  • Short, quick pull back, then snap the wrists and push the bottom hand through.
  • Shoot in stride: the release can come off either foot.
  • Pick a spot before the puck arrives; look at the net, not the puck.

Common mistakes

  • Stickhandling once or twice before shooting, which gives the goaltender time to set.
  • Big wind-up that turns a snapshot into a slow slapshot.
  • Stopping the feet to shoot.

Say it: “Catch and snap, no extra touch.”

Make it harder

  • Feeder passes into the skates or the backhand so the shooter must adjust and still release quickly.
  • Add a defender who starts at the net and closes on the shooter with the stick only.

Make it easier

  • Shooter stands still in the slot and receives a slow pass.
  • Shoot at a target such as a shooter tutor or a cone in a corner of the net, with the goaltender resting.
