Point shots and net traffic
Defenders get pucks through from the blue line while forwards screen the goaltender and hunt tips and rebounds, the way many goals are scored in a settled offensive zone.
Start / 4
- Time
- 15 min
- Players
- 6–16
- Age
- U13+
- Area
- Offensive zone
- Equipment
- 30 pucksfull hockey equipment with neck guard, per player1 goaltender in full gear
Setup
- Full equipment for everyone, including a full cage and neck guard; the net-front players especially. G in full goalie gear in the right net.
- LD and RD at the points. RW on the half wall with the pucks. C and LW start in the slot area, ready to go to the net.
- One defender (X1) works in front of the net against the screen. Start X1 passive.
- Wrist and snap shots only, kept low. No slapshots with players in front of the net.
How it runs
- RW passes up to RD at the point.
- As the pass goes, C sets a screen in front of G, outside the crease, and LW slides to the far post.
- RD walks along the blue line towards the middle to find a lane, then shoots low and hard once G has called ready.
- C tries to tip it or screen G's view; LW and C pounce on any rebound. X1 tries to tie up sticks and clear rebounds.
- Play out the rebound until a goal, a save or a clear, then clear the crease of pucks before the next rep.
- Alternate sides every few shots. Short reps; water between rounds.
Coaching points
- Point shot: get it through, not over. Low shots create tips and rebounds; high shots go wide or over the glass.
- Walk the line to change the angle and move a defender out of the lane before you shoot.
- A quick wrist shot that hits the net beats a big wind-up that gets blocked.
- Screen: stand side-on just outside the crease, stick blade on the ice, eyes on the puck. Do not turn your back to the shooter.
- Tips: blade on the ice and angled towards the net; let the puck hit the stick rather than swinging at it.
- Stay out of the crease. It belongs to G, and contact with G is a penalty.
Common mistakes
- Shooting into the first defender's shin pads without moving the feet.
- The screen stands too close and gets in the crease, or too far away to bother G.
- Everyone watches the shot and nobody goes for the rebound.
- Shooting before G is ready.
Say it: “Low and through. Screen, tip, rebound.”
Make it harder
- X1 goes live and battles the screen; add a second defender to block shots.
- One-touch: RD shoots straight off the pass.
- The forwards must change positions (screen to far post) between reps.
Make it easier
- No defender in front; the screen stands still.
- Shoot from the top of the circles instead of the blue line.
