One-timers and cross-seam passes
A passer walks the half-wall and sends the puck across the slot to a shooter who one-times it, building the timing, the pass and the strike together.

- 20 min
- Players
- 5–16
- Age
- U16+
- Area
- Offensive zone
- Equipment
- 30 pucks1 goal4 cones
Setup
- Full equipment for everyone and a goaltender in full gear in the net.
- Passers queue at the top of the half-wall on one side (P1, P3); shooters queue at the top of the opposite circle (P2, P4).
- One player or a coach (X1) stands in the slot with a stick on the ice as the lane to pass around; a cone works too.
- Off-wing shooters (a left-handed shot on the right side, a right-handed shot on the left) receive the pass on the forehand facing the net, which suits a one-timer.
How it runs
- P1 carries down the half-wall, pulling the goaltender and X1 towards the puck, then passes flat across the slot past X1 to P2.
- P2 times a step into the pass and one-times it, aiming low or far side. Only shoot when the goaltender is set.
- Passer and shooter swap queues. The next pair goes when the goaltender has reset and the crease is clear of pucks.
- After about 8 minutes, switch sides so everyone shoots from both circles. Give the goaltender a short break every 10 shots.
Coaching points
- Pass: flat, firm and into the shooter's forehand just in front of their stance. Saucer it only if a stick is in the lane.
- Shooter: blade open to the passer, weight loaded on the back leg, then transfer through the puck as it arrives.
- Strike the ice just behind the puck and follow through towards the target.
- Arrive in the shooting spot as the pass comes; standing still lets the goaltender set early.
- Keep sticks below the shoulders on the follow-through when others are near the net.
Common mistakes
- A big wind-up that misses the pass: keep the backswing compact.
- Passing behind the shooter, so the puck is on the back foot.
- Staring at the shooter before the pass and telling the goaltender where it's going.
- Shooting before the goaltender is set.
Say it: “Open blade, step in, strike through.”
Make it harder
- X1 plays the lane live with the stick.
- Pass from below the goal line, or have the shooter start from the point and skate into the spot.
Make it easier
- The shooter stops the puck first, then shoots.
- Passes from a stationary spot on the half-wall.
