Setup

  1. End of the session, all pucks collected and nets moved off the ice or to the boards.
  2. Everyone stays in full equipment, helmets on and cages done up, until they step off the ice.
  3. Goaltenders join in with what they can do comfortably in their gear.

How it runs

  1. Two easy laps of the rink, skating with long, slow strides and gliding round the corners. Everyone goes the same direction.
  2. Half a lap of glides: push, glide on one foot for a count of three, switch feet.
  3. Gather in the centre circle. Kneel for a hip flexor stretch (one knee down, push the hips forward gently), 20–30 seconds each side.
  4. Groin stretch: wide kneel with hands on the ice, sit back gently. Then a seated hamstring stretch, reaching for the toe of the skate.
  5. Drink while the coach asks two quick questions: what went well today, and one thing to practise next time.
  6. Finish with a team cheer and leave the ice through the gate, one at a time.

Coaching points

  • Cool-down laps are easy: the aim is to breathe slowly, not to race.
  • Stretches are gentle and held still; no bouncing.
  • Helmets stay on until off the ice.
  • Everyone answers at least one review question over a few sessions.
  • Keep it short and positive so players leave wanting to come back.

Common mistakes

  • Turning the laps into a race.
  • Taking helmets or gloves off on the ice.
  • Skipping the cool-down because the session ran over.
  • A long coach talk while players get cold; keep it to a couple of minutes.

Say it: “Slow laps, gentle stretch, one thing learnt.”

Make it harder

  • Players lead a stretch each, explaining what it's for.
  • Add backward glides on the laps.

Make it easier

  • One lap only, then stretches at the boards for balance.
  • Coach shows each stretch and everyone copies.
