Forecheck: 1-2-2 basics

One forward angles the puck carrier to the boards, two forwards seal the walls and two defenders hold the blue line, so the opponents' breakout is squeezed along the wall.

Setup

  1. Full equipment for everyone, including a full cage and neck guard. G in full goalie gear in the right net.
  2. Forechecking unit (C, LW, RW, LD, RD) starts in the neutral zone. Breakout group (X1–X4) sets up in the right end: two defenders low, two wingers on the walls.
  3. The 1-2-2 is one common forechecking structure, often used to contain rather than to chase. Teams use others; teach it as one option.
  4. Body contact level: angling, stick-on-stick and rubbing out along the boards only. No body checking in this drill.

How it runs

  1. The coach dumps a puck into the corner and X1 retrieves it.
  2. The first forechecker (C here, F1) skates an inside-out route, taking away the middle and the reverse behind the net, and steers X1 towards the boards.
  3. The two wingers (F2 and F3) sit high on each wall, near the top of the circles, ready for the pass up the wall.
  4. LD and RD hold the blue line. The strong-side D can step up to keep a puck in on the wall; the far D stays back as cover.
  5. When X1 rims it up the wall, the strong-side winger angles X3, plays stick on puck and wins it. The nearest forward supports and the far winger collapses to the slot.
  6. A turnover becomes a quick shot once G is set. Run 30–40 second reps, then rotate groups. Water between rounds.

Coaching points

  • F1: approach on an angle from the inside, not straight at the puck. Show the boards as the only way out.
  • Stick on the ice in the passing lane as you angle; finish with stick-on-stick, not a hit.
  • F2 and F3: be patient. Stay high enough that the pass up the wall comes to you, then close fast.
  • Pin and rub out along the boards with your shoulder and hip from the side. Never from behind, never at the head, and no contact when a player is facing the boards.
  • D: hold the line with your stick in the lane. Only pinch when you are sure a forward is covering behind you.
  • Communicate: F1 calls 'wall' or 'reverse' so the others know where the puck is going.

Common mistakes

  • F1 skates straight at X1 and is beaten by a simple reverse behind the net.
  • Both wingers dive low, leaving the wall empty for an easy breakout.
  • Both D pinch at once and give up an odd-man rush.
  • Chasing into the corner with speed and making contact from behind.

Say it: “Angle, seal the wall, hold the line.”

Make it harder

  • Add the fifth breakout player (X5) as a swinging centre so the forecheck has more to cover.
  • Breakout group earns a point for each clean exit, the forecheck group for each turnover.

Make it easier

  • Breakout group passes only on the coach's signal, so the forecheckers can see the shape.
  • Walk the routes with no puck, then add the puck at half speed.
