Controlled scrimmage with conditions

A full-ice game with one coaching condition at a time, such as three passes before a shot, so players practise the week's theme under real game pressure with offside and icing called.

Setup

  1. Full equipment for everyone, including a full cage and neck guard. Two goaltenders in full gear.
  2. Two teams in different coloured jerseys, 5-on-5 (or 4-on-4 for smaller groups), with lines changing on the whistle.
  3. The coach on the ice runs the game and calls offside and icing. Check your association's rules for hybrid or touch icing and use the one your games use.
  4. No body checking. Body contact is limited to angling, stick-on-stick and battles along the boards from the side.
  5. Pick one condition per block, tied to what the team has just practised.

How it runs

  1. Play in blocks of about 5 minutes, each with a different condition. Shifts are 30–45 seconds: the coach whistles and the next lines jump on.
  2. Example condition: three completed passes before a shot can count. A goal without three passes is not counted.
  3. Other conditions: both D must be over the red line when a goal is scored; a goal only counts from a rebound or a tip; every dump-in must be won back to count.
  4. Offside and icing are called. After an offside or an icing, restart with a faceoff in the right place.
  5. Stop play briefly to coach a moment, then restart with a faceoff. Keep stops short so the game keeps its pace.
  6. Water between blocks; rest players who are not on the ice on the bench, not on the boards.

Coaching points

  • Look for the condition in real game situations, not as a separate exercise. Praise the players who find a way to meet it.
  • Scan before you get the puck so the next pass is ready.
  • Watch the blue line on every entry: the puck crosses first.
  • Change lines quickly and on time; a long shift is a tired shift.
  • Shoot only at a set goaltender, and stay out of the crease.

Common mistakes

  • Players forget the condition when the game gets busy. Repeat it at every stoppage.
  • Forcing passes just to reach the count instead of keeping the puck.
  • Long shifts and slow changes that leave tired players on the ice.
  • Arguing offside and icing calls instead of resetting quickly.

Say it: “Play the game, find the condition.”

Make it harder

  • Combine two conditions, for example three passes and a shot from the slot.
  • One team plays a player short for 2 minutes to practise the power play and penalty kill.
  • Limit carries: every player must pass within three strides.

Make it easier

  • Two passes before a shot.
  • Play 3-on-3 cross-ice in one zone with small nets and no offside.
