Cool-down and review
An easy walk, gentle stretches for the back, hips, shoulders and wrists, then a short review in pairs and as a group of what worked and what to practise next.
Start / 4
- Time
- 10 min
- Players
- 1–16
- Age
- U10+
- Area
- Shaded spot near the practice area
- Equipment
- water bottlesone club per player for the rotation stretch
Setup
- Pick a shady spot away from anyone still hitting. Clubs go back in bags or lie together on the ground.
- Players bring water; reapply sunscreen if the session continues outside.
How it runs
- Walk easily to the shade for a couple of minutes, carrying clubs and water.
- Stretches in a semicircle facing the coach, each held for about 20–30 seconds while breathing slowly: chest opener with hands clasped behind, cross-body shoulder stretch each side, standing hip-flexor stretch each side, gentle trunk turns with a club held across the shoulders, then wrist and forearm stretches.
- Pairs: each player tells their partner one thing that went well today and one thing to practise.
- Back together: each player names one practice task for next time; the coach notes them down.
- The coach asks about any pain in the back, wrists or elbows. Anyone sore is advised to rest and get it checked if it persists.
Coaching points
- Ease into each stretch to mild tension; no bouncing or forcing.
- Breathe out slowly as you settle into the stretch.
- Make the review specific: 'my finish was balanced', not 'it was good'.
- Pain means stop, not stretch harder.
Common mistakes
- Rushing or skipping the stretches.
- Only talking about the bad shots.
- Stretching through pain or an injury.
Say it: “Breathe out, ease in.”
Make it harder
- Players take turns to lead a stretch and explain what it is for.
- Write a short practice plan for the week.
Make it easier
- The walk and three stretches only.
- The coach asks each player one simple question.
