Setup
- Two lines at halfway: wide runners (A1) near the touchline, finishers (A2) in the middle.
- Coach (CO) with the balls just inside halfway; a goalkeeper in goal.
- A cone on each touchline about 5 m from the goal line marks where the ball goes across.
How it runs
- CO plays the ball into A1's path down the line.
- A1 drives to the cone and plays a low, hard ball across the face of goal.
- A2 sprints from halfway and finishes at the second post.
- Swap lines after each rep; switch sides every 6 reps.
Coaching points
- A1: head up before the cross. Low and hard, between the goalkeeper and the post.
- A2: sprint straight first, then bend the run to arrive at the second post.
- Time the run: arrive as the ball does, don't wait at the post.
- Finish with the inside foot or a toe-poke. Stay on your feet; no sliding.
- Aim back across the goalkeeper towards the side they've just left.
Common mistakes
- A2 gets to the post too early and has to stop.
- Cross floated in the air, giving the goalkeeper time.
- Leaning back and blazing over from close range.
- Ball played behind the runner.
Say it: “Low across, arrive late, second post.”
Make it harder
- Add a recovering defender who starts 3 m behind A2.
- A1 must cross first time from CO's pass.
Make it easier
- A2 starts closer, at the 10 m mark.
- Goalkeeper stays on the near post.
