Setup
- A goalkeeper in goal, a shooter on each side of the area (A1 and A2) about 6–8 m out.
- A coach (CO) with the balls in the middle, about 10 m out.
How it runs
- CO passes to A1, who shoots first time at the near post.
- The keeper moves across, sets and makes a block save.
- CO then feeds A2 on the other side; A2 dribbles in close and the keeper spreads.
- Four reps each side, then a new keeper.
Coaching points
- Move while the ball travels; be set, feet planted, as the shooter strikes.
- Block: drop one knee to the floor at the near post, shin flat to close the low gap, hands out to the side.
- Spread: when the shooter is very close, go big with arms and legs wide, chest facing the ball.
- Stay tall as long as possible; don't go down before the shot.
- Get back to your feet straight after the save.
Common mistakes
- Going down too early and getting chipped.
- Gap between the knee and the post at the near side.
- Turning the face or body away from the shot.
Say it: “Set, block, up.”
Make it harder
- Shooters can choose near post, far post or a pass across.
- Quicker feeds with no reset time between sides.
Make it easier
- Shooters strike at 60% power to a set side.
- Keeper starts in the block position and only practises the shape.
