Setup

  1. Four attackers (A1–A4) build out from their keeper (GK) at one end.
  2. Four pressers (D1–D4) each pick one attacker to mark across the whole court. A keeper in the far goal is optional.
  3. Spare players wait in the substitution zone and roll on every 2 minutes.

How it runs

  1. GK starts with the ball and must release it within 4 seconds.
  2. Each presser stays tight on their own attacker; the one furthest from the ball tucks in to cover the middle.
  3. When the ball arrives, the nearest presser closes at once and shows the attacker towards the touchline.
  4. Pressers win the ball: they attack the attackers' goal straight away.
  5. Attackers score by dribbling over halfway or scoring at the far goal. Rounds of 2 minutes, then swap.

Coaching points

  • Mark close enough to touch the attacker as the ball arrives.
  • Stand on the ball side to deny the pass, then get goalside when they receive.
  • Once GK has released the ball, a pass back to GK in their own half isn't allowed until a presser has touched it. That's your trigger to squeeze.
  • Use the touchline as an extra defender.
  • Stay on your feet. Win it by stepping in front, not with a slide.
  • Sprint back if the press is beaten: your first job is to get goalside.

Common mistakes

  • Two pressers leaving their players to chase the ball.
  • Marking from behind, so the attacker receives and turns.
  • Diving in and getting beaten with one touch.
  • Pressing in ones and twos, not as a group.

Say it: “Tight, touch-tight, squeeze.”

Make it harder

  • Pressers must win the ball within 8 seconds.
  • No cover: the far presser must stay touch-tight too.
  • Pressers' goal only counts if it comes within 5 seconds of winning the ball.

Make it easier

  • 3v3 plus keepers on a smaller court.
  • GK must throw to the side nearest the ball, so pressers know where it goes.
