Setup

  1. A keeper in goal and the coach about 6 m out with the balls.
  2. A target cone out to the side for the keeper's throw.
  3. The other players wait at 10 m, each with a ball.

How it runs

  1. Block: the coach rolls or toe-pokes low balls at the keeper, who gets the body behind the ball and holds it.
  2. After each save the keeper throws the ball out to the cone within 4 seconds.
  3. Spread: a player dribbles in from 10 m; the keeper steps out, makes themselves big and stays on their feet as long as possible.
  4. The player shoots or tries to go round; the keeper blocks with any part of the body.
  5. Swap keepers every 6 balls so everyone has a go.

Coaching points

  • Ready position: feet shoulder-width apart, knees bent, hands low and in front.
  • Body behind the ball, so if the hands miss, the body stops it.
  • Spread: arms and legs wide, chest facing the ball, wait for the shot.
  • Throw out quickly, underarm and along the floor.

Common mistakes

  • Standing tall with straight legs.
  • Going down too early in the 1v1.
  • Turning away from the shot.

Say it: “Low, behind it, big.”

Make it harder

  • Shots to either side, not straight at the keeper.
  • The attacker can try to go round the keeper.

Make it easier

  • The coach rolls the ball by hand.
  • Slower shots straight at the keeper.
