Setup
- A line of passers on one wing at halfway, a line of runners on the far side.
- A goalkeeper and one defender (D1) guarding the near post.
How it runs
- A1 dribbles down the wing; A2 starts the run from the far side at the same time.
- A1 plays a low diagonal across the face of goal, past the keeper and D1.
- A2 arrives at the second post and finishes first time.
- Players swap lines; change wings halfway through.
Coaching points
- Passer: look up early, play it low and firm across the goal.
- Aim for the space just in front of the far post, not at the runner.
- Runner: hold the run, then arrive at pace; don't get there too early.
- Finish with the inside of the foot or a stretched toe, staying on your feet.
- Run on the defender's blind side so they can't see the ball and you together.
Common mistakes
- Runner standing at the far post waiting for the ball.
- Diagonal floated in the air instead of along the floor.
- Passer delays and the keeper gets across.
Say it: “Low across, arrive late.”
Make it harder
- Add a second defender who tracks the runner.
- Passer must play it within three touches of crossing halfway.
Make it easier
- No defender.
- Runner starts closer to the far post.
