Setup

  1. Four defenders (D1–D4) and a keeper defend one goal against four attackers (A1–A4).
  2. The coach places the ball for a kick-in or a corner. A1 takes it; the attackers run their own routines.

How it runs

  1. D1 stands 5 m from the ball, in the line of the most dangerous pass.
  2. D2–D4 mark one attacker each, goalside, with sight of the ball and their player.
  3. When an attacker sets a block, the two defenders involved call 'switch' and swap players.
  4. Defenders count the 4 seconds aloud. Ball not played in time: defenders get the kick-in.
  5. Defenders win the ball: they break out to cones at halfway. Six restarts, then swap.

Coaching points

  • Stand 5 m from the ball, no closer, and block the pass back inside to the middle.
  • Goalside and side-on: see the ball and your player at once.
  • Switch early and loudly. Late switches leave two defenders on one attacker.
  • Keeper: organise the marking and shout the count.
  • Stay on your feet. Step in front to intercept, don't dive in.

Common mistakes

  • D1 encroaching inside 5 m, which gives a free kick or a retake.
  • Watching the ball and losing the runner.
  • Following your player straight into the block.
  • Nobody marking the player at the top of the area.

Say it: “Goalside, talk, switch.”

Make it harder

  • Attackers know three routines and may pick any of them.
  • Defenders must win the ball, not just stop the shot, for the point.

Make it easier

  • Attackers walk through their routine first.
  • 3v3 plus keepers, with only one block allowed.
