Setup
- A goalkeeper in goal. Mark the edge of the box with cones if there are no lines.
- A set-back player stands at the top of the D with their back to goal.
- Two lines of shooters 25 m out, one either side of centre, each with balls.
How it runs
- The shooter passes into the set-back player and follows the pass.
- The set-back player lays it off first time, a few metres in front of the shooter.
- The shooter strikes from outside the box with one or two touches, then joins the other line.
- Alternate lines. Swap the set-back player every 6 shots.
Coaching points
- Plant the standing foot beside the ball, pointing at the target.
- Strike through the middle of the ball with the laces, ankle locked.
- Head and chest over the ball to keep the shot low.
- Aim for the corners; low and hard is hardest to save.
Common mistakes
- Leaning back, so the shot flies over the bar.
- Reaching for the ball instead of stepping onto it.
- Trying to hit it as hard as possible and losing accuracy.
Say it: “Step onto it. Laces through. Keep it low.”
Make it harder
- Add a defender who closes down from the set-back player's side.
- Score only in the corners (mark them with cones).
Make it easier
- Take a touch before shooting.
- Shoot from a rolling ball fed by the coach, no set-back.
