Setup
- Two servers face each other 25 m apart, each with a ball.
- A middle player stands between them, next to a 2 m cone gate on each side.
- Queue the rest of the group behind the middle player.
How it runs
- A server passes into the middle player, who opens up and plays out through a gate to the far server.
- The middle player turns and receives from the other server.
- Swap the middle player every 60 seconds.
Coaching points
- Check your shoulder before the ball comes.
- Stand side-on so you can see both servers.
- First touch across your body, into the space beside you.
Common mistakes
- Receiving square-on, so the first touch stops the ball dead.
- Touching the ball back towards the server.
Say it: “Check, open up, play forward.”
Make it harder
- Add a passive defender behind the middle player.
- The server calls which gate just before the pass.
Make it easier
- Middle player can take three touches.
- Servers roll the ball instead of passing.
