Setup
- Mark a 20 × 10 m channel.
- On the far end line, set a 3 m centre gate and a 2 m wide gate in one corner.
- Attackers queue at the start line. Defenders queue on the end line, each with a ball.
How it runs
- The defender passes to the attacker and sprints out to close them down.
- The attacker scores 2 through the centre gate, 1 through the wide gate.
- The defender scores 2 for winning it and dribbling over the start line, 1 for knocking it out.
- Next pair goes. Swap queues after six goes each.
Coaching points
- Sprint to close the space, then take short steps for the last two metres.
- Get side-on, knees bent, an arm's length away. Don't square up.
- Stand a little to the centre side so the only way forward is wide.
- Be patient. Tackle when their touch goes too far, not before.
Common mistakes
- Running in flat-footed and getting beaten by one touch.
- Diving in to tackle too early.
- Standing square, so the attacker can go either way.
Say it: “Close fast, slow down, side-on. Show them wide.”
Make it harder
- Widen the channel to 14 m.
- Make the centre gate 4 m wide.
Make it easier
- Narrow the channel to 8 m.
- The attacker must stop the ball dead before going forward.
