Goalkeeper reaction saves

Two servers shoot from close range on the coach's call, so the keeper must move, set and save, then get up for the rebound.

Setup

  1. A goal on soft grass.
  2. S1 and S2 stand at cones 10–12 m out, either side of the centre, with balls.
  3. C stands to the side and calls "one" or "two".

How it runs

  1. GK sets in the middle. C calls a server, who strikes at once, firmly but at a savable height.
  2. GK adjusts with quick steps, sets and saves. If it can't be held, parry it wide.
  3. The other server follows in on any rebound for a second shot.
  4. 8 shots, then swap keepers.

Coaching points

  • Short, quick steps to get in line with the ball before it is struck.
  • Set as the shooter's standing foot goes down: still, balanced, weight forward.
  • If you can't hold it, parry it wide, away from goal.
  • Get up fast; the second save matters.

Common mistakes

  • Still moving when the ball is struck.
  • Parrying back into the middle of the goal.
  • Diving when a step and a catch would do.

Say it: “Move, set, save, up.”

Make it harder

  • C calls later, as the server touches the ball.
  • Add a pole or player 5 m out as a screen the shot comes past.

Make it easier

  • Servers throw or volley from the hands.
  • C calls earlier and servers shoot from 14 m.
