Setup

  1. A full-size goal and penalty area.
  2. W1 and W2 on each wing, level with the edge of the box, each with balls.
  3. A1, A2 and D1 in the box; add them after one unopposed round.

How it runs

  1. Crosses alternate wings. Round one is unopposed; GK comes, catches and holds.
  2. Add A1, A2 and D1. GK decides to catch, punch or stay, and calls early.
  3. After a catch, GK throws out quickly to the far winger to start a counter.
  4. 8 crosses per keeper, then swap.

Coaching points

  • Start 1–2 m off the line, around the middle of the goal, body open to see the ball and the box.
  • Decide early and call loud and early, "Keeper!"
  • Take off on one foot, drive the knee up and catch at the highest point in a W.
  • If you can't hold it, punch it high, far and wide.

Common mistakes

  • Starting on the line or tight to the near post.
  • A late call, so keeper and defender collide.
  • Letting the ball drop to the chest instead of catching at full height.

Say it: “Start off your line. Call early. Catch high.”

Make it harder

  • A third attacker stands in front of the keeper.
  • Whipped, inswinging crosses.

Make it easier

  • Throw the crosses in by hand from 15 m.
  • No attackers; keeper only.
