Post moves: drop step and hook
Post players seal, catch and feel where the defender is, then drop-step to the baseline or turn middle into a jump hook.
Start / 4
- Time
- 12 min
- Players
- 3–9
- Age
- U12+
- Area
- Half court
- Equipment
- 3 basketballs (size 6 or 7)
Setup
- Groups of three: a post player on the low block, a defender behind them, a feeder on the wing.
- The post starts outside the lane so the 3-second count isn't running.
How it runs
- The post seals with a wide base and a hand target; the feeder passes in.
- Catch with two hands, chin the ball and feel the defender with the backside.
- Defender on the high side: drop-step the baseline foot, seal them on the hip and power up off two feet.
- Defender on the baseline side: pivot and step into the lane for a jump hook, shooting hand away from the defender.
Coaching points
- Sit low and wide before the catch; meet the pass with two hands.
- The pivot foot stays down until the ball is released; one power dribble is allowed, then gather.
- Hook: inside arm up as a shield, not pushing, shooting elbow up and a flick over the top.
Common mistakes
- Bringing the ball down low where guards can dig at it.
- Spinning without knowing where the defender is.
- Camping in the lane before the catch (3 seconds).
Say it: “Seal, chin, feel, go.”
Make it harder
- The defender plays live and chooses the side after the pass.
- Add an up-and-under counter if the defender jumps at the hook.
Make it easier
- The defender holds a pad still on one side, called out by the coach.
- Start with the ball in hand on the block, no feed.
